Ginkgo and Bacopa for Memory: What the Studies Really Show

Quick answer

Ginkgo did not lower dementia risk in three large studies, including GEM, which followed 3,000+ adults aged 75+ for about 6 years (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Bacopa shows small gains on some memory tests in small trials, usually at 300 mg a day for about 3 months (ADDF, Bacopa). Neuro Recall holds both inside one 635 mg blend of ten, with no amount for either.

Short answer

Do ginkgo and bacopa help memory?

Not much, going by the best studies. Ginkgo has the bigger trials and weaker results; bacopa has friendlier results from smaller trials.

  • Ginkgo: large, long, placebo-controlled studies. No drop in dementia risk (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
  • Bacopa: many short, small trials. Small changes on some tests, mostly at about 300 mg a day (ADDF, Bacopa).
  • Neuro Recall: no trial of the finished formula has been published.

Ginkgo

What did the GEM study and other large ginkgo trials find?

They found no protection against dementia. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) sums up three large studies, and none showed that ginkgo lowered the risk (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

The largest was the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study, or GEM. It enrolled more than 3,000 adults aged 75 and older. Half took ginkgo and half took a placebo for a median of about 6 years. At the end, the two groups did not differ (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

QuestionWhat studies foundStrength
Does it lower dementia risk? No, in three large studies, GEM includedStrong (large, long trials)
Does it ease symptoms in people who already have dementia?Maybe a modest benefit; results are not consistentMixed

What a "null" trial tells you

It does not prove ginkgo can never help anyone. It does show that, for most people over 75, years of ginkgo did not change who went on to develop dementia.

Ginkgo's known side effects are dizziness, stomach upset and headache (NCCIH, Ginkgo). More on our ginkgo biloba page.

Bacopa

What are the benefits of bacopa monnieri for the brain?

Bacopa's trials point to small gains on some memory tests. The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) found many small trials, with reviews pooling up to 11 of them (ADDF, Bacopa).

Encouraging

Most found something

Nearly every trial reported at least one small gain on at least one test.

Caution

No two tests alike

The trials rarely used the same test, so it is hard to say which skill moved.

Context

Small changes

A small score gain on paper may not show up in daily life.

Typical trials gave about 300 mg a day, with a range of 250 to 600 mg. Bacopa was reported safe over 3 months; nausea and stomach cramps were the usual complaints (ADDF, Bacopa). See the bacopa monnieri page for the full profile.

How long does bacopa take to work?

In trials, weeks to months, with most running about 12 weeks. A change after a few days is not what the research describes.

Doses

Why does the dose matter in memory studies?

A study result belongs to the amount that was tested. Give a fraction of it, and you are no longer repeating the study.

The product

What do the studies mean for a 635 mg blend of ten?

The label caps how much bacopa there can be. Blend ingredients are listed from most to least by weight (FDA, Labeling guide), and bacopa is fourth of ten.

  1. Read the order

Cinnamon comes first, ginkgo second, bilberry third and bacopa fourth. Each of the first three weighs at least as much as bacopa.

  2. Do the division

Four ingredients at least as heavy as bacopa must fit inside 635 mg. So bacopa is at most about 158 mg, even if the last six weighed almost nothing.

  3. Compare with trials

158 mg is about half of the usual 300 mg, and the true amount is likely lower. Ginkgo, listed second, can be at most about 317 mg.

The bacopa extract is standardized to at least 20% bacosides, the compounds studied in the plant. That describes the extract's strength, not the amount in your capsule.

To be fair, Neuro Recall does not claim a trial dose, and the Supplement Facts panel names every ingredient. It just cannot show that the capsule matches what bacopa trials gave.

Combination

Do ginkgo and bacopa work together?

No one knows. Neither source we rely on reports a trial of the two herbs taken together (NCCIH, Ginkgo) (ADDF, Bacopa).

Two weakly supported herbs do not add up to a strong effect. Their side effects and medicine cautions do add up, though.

Two checks before you start

Bacopa calls for care with thyroid medicine and with dementia drugs that act on acetylcholine (ADDF, Bacopa). Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk with warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Our post on memory supplements and blood thinners has a list to bring to the pharmacy.

Bottom line

How should you judge a memory supplement with ginkgo and bacopa?

By your own record, kept for a set time. Ingredient studies only tell you what is plausible.

  1. Write down three things you often forget, before the first capsule.
  2. Take 2 capsules daily, as the label says. Steady daily use is how the herbs were studied.
  3. Add one line a week about sleep, focus and those three lapses.
  4. Review the log at about 3 months, the length of most bacopa trials.

A memory change that is new, fast or worrying needs a doctor first. Our guide to normal forgetfulness and warning signs explains what to watch for.

FAQ

Ginkgo and bacopa for memory: common questions

What did the GEM ginkgo study find?

GEM found no difference between ginkgo and placebo. More than 3,000 adults aged 75 and older took one or the other for a median of about 6 years, and ginkgo did not lower the number who developed dementia. Two other large studies agreed (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

How long does bacopa monnieri take to work?

Most bacopa trials ran about 12 weeks at around 300 mg a day before memory was tested again, and the changes were small. Nothing suggests effects within days, so a fair personal trial takes a few months of steady use (ADDF, Bacopa).

How much bacopa is in Neuro Recall?

The label does not say. Bacopa is the fourth of ten ingredients in a 635 mg blend listed by weight, so it can be at most about 158 mg per 2 capsules. Most trials used about 300 mg a day.

Can ginkgo help mild memory problems?

It is unclear. NCCIH calls the evidence for milder memory problems uncertain, and results in dementia are mixed, with at most a modest benefit. Large studies found it did not lower dementia risk (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

Is it safe to take bacopa every day?

Bacopa was reported safe in trials of 3 months, about as long as most ran. Nausea and stomach cramps were the main complaints. Ask a doctor first if you take thyroid medicine or a dementia drug (ADDF, Bacopa).

Why do bacopa studies disagree with each other?

They mostly measured different things. Each small trial picked its own memory or thinking tests, so a gain on one test rarely lined up with a gain on another. That keeps the overall picture fuzzy.
